Granada's Neighborhoods

Granada is a city of distinct quarters — each with its own history, character, and reason to visit. The Albaicín is ancient Moorish Granada; Sacromonte is where flamenco lives; Realejo is the quiet, mostly local district where Terraza 6 is based; and the city centre is where daily life plays out around the cathedral. Here is what to expect from each.

Essential Granada

Albaicín

The Albaicín is Granada's ancient Moorish quarter — a tangle of narrow cobbled lanes, whitewashed houses, and walled carmen gardens rising above the Darro river. It was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site alongside the Alhambra, and the views of the palace complex from the Mirador de San Nicolás are among the most famous in Spain. Go on foot, get a little lost, and allow at least half a day.

Sacromonte — cave homes and flamenco in Granada's hillside neighbourhood
Caves, Flamenco & History

Sacromonte

Built into the hillside above the Albaicín, Sacromonte is where Granada's Gitano community has lived for centuries in cave homes carved from the rock. The neighbourhood is also home to the city's most authentic flamenco shows — intimate zambra performances in candlelit caves that are unlike anything else in Andalusia. Best visited in the evening.

Realejo

Realejo is Granada's old Jewish quarter — today one of the quieter and more local parts of the city, with street art, independent bars, and noticeably less tourist traffic than the Albaicín. This is where Terraza 6 is located, about a 10-minute walk from the city centre and 900 metres from the Alhambra entrance. A good base that keeps you close to everything without being in the middle of it.
