Beaches Near Granada - The Costa Tropical in Under an Hour

Most people do not realise how close Granada is to the sea. The Costa Tropical coastline sits roughly 65 kilometres south of the city, about an hour by car, making a beach day a very easy addition to any Granada trip. The water is warmer and calmer here than on the Costa del Sol, the villages are more low-key, and the crowds considerably thinner. Below are the four beaches we most often recommend to guests staying at Terraza 6.

Coastal Paradise Unveiled

Almuñécar

The most popular beach town on the Costa Tropical and the most complete destination of the four. Almuñécar has a long seafront promenade, an interesting old town built around a Moorish castle, and a string of beaches that vary from broad and sandy to narrow and pebbly. There is a good selection of restaurants and the Roman fish salting factory ruins are worth a look if you have time.

Tranquil Haven by Motril

Calahonda

A small, unhurried village just outside Motril that sees far fewer visitors than Almuñécar or Nerja. The beach is dark sand and backed by the road, but the pace is relaxed and the seafood restaurants along the front serve excellent fresh fish. A good option if you want a genuinely quiet day by the water without crowds.

Hidden Coastal Gem

La Herradura

Set inside a perfect horseshoe-shaped bay between two rocky headlands, La Herradura is one of the most sheltered and visually striking beaches on the Costa Tropical. The water is exceptionally clear and the bay is well known for diving; there is a marine reserve just offshore. It is smaller and quieter than Almuñécar and better for swimming in most conditions.

Where Beauty Meets Culture

Nerja

Nerja is a 90-minute drive from Granada but well worth it. The Balcon de Europa promenade has views that are genuinely hard to match anywhere on the Spanish coast, and the beaches below, Burriana in particular, are among the best on the Costa del Sol. The Nerja Caves, a short drive inland, are also one of the most impressive prehistoric sites in Spain. Plan for a full day.
