A Sheltered Bay with Good Diving and a Low-Key Seafront
La Herradura sits inside a near-perfect horseshoe-shaped bay between two rocky headlands, about 75km from Granada. The bay's geometry gives the main beach — a long strip of dark pebble backed by a seafront promenade — considerably more shelter than the open stretches of coast on either side, which is why it attracts windsurfers when the Poniente blows in during the afternoon. The marina at the western end of the bay is the base for several diving schools; the underwater terrain here, with rocky reefs and good visibility, makes it one of the better dive sites on the Andalusian coast.
The town itself is small and low-key — a couple of streets of restaurants, dive shops, and apartments, without the resort feel of Almuñécar to the east. Playa de la Herradura is the main beach. Playa del Muerto, reached by a short cliff path from the eastern headland, is a smaller shingle cove popular with snorkellers. The Punta de la Mona headland at the eastern end has a ruined castle and good views back across the bay.
