The Largest Resort Town on Granada's Southern Coast
Almuñécar is the biggest resort town on Granada's Costa Tropical, roughly 85km south of the city — around an hour by car on the A-44. It has been a settlement since at least Phoenician times (the town's Roman name was Sexi), and evidence of both periods survives: a Phoenician Necropolis in the centre of town and a Roman fish-salting factory (Factoría de Salazones) near the seafront. The Castillo de San Miguel, a 16th-century castle built over earlier Moorish and Roman remains, sits on a promontory between the two main beaches.
The beaches are a mix of dark sand and fine pebble. Playa de San Cristóbal is the largest and most central, while smaller coves east toward Playa Velilla are quieter. The Paseo del Altillo promenade runs along the front for several kilometres, with restaurants and chiringuitos at regular intervals. For a full beach day from Granada, Almuñécar offers the most variety on the Costa Tropical.
