Day Trips from Granada

Eight Towns Worth the Drive from Granada

Granada makes an excellent base for day trips, and the towns within an hour or two of the city are surprisingly varied: river gorges, cave neighbourhoods, Moorish hilltop villages, paleontological trails, and one view that National Geographic once listed among the world's best. All of these are reachable by car from Terraza 6, most in under an hour.

Río Verde canyon and Nasrid irrigation route at Dúrcal near Granada
Enchanting Ruta de los Bolos

Dúrcal

The main reason to come to Dúrcal is the Ruta de los Bolos del Agua, a walk through the Río Verde canyon along a Nasrid-era acequia cut directly into the rock face. The trail passes natural pools and small waterfalls and is accessible enough for most fitness levels. About 30 minutes south of Granada.

Whitewashed streets of Frigiliana village near Nerja, Malaga
A Captivating Andalusian Village

Frigiliana

Regularly voted one of Andalusia's most beautiful villages, Frigiliana sits in the hills above Nerja on the Costa del Sol. The upper barrio, a dense tangle of whitewashed lanes, flower pots, and tilework, has changed little since the Moorish period. Pair it with a visit to Nerja on the same day and you have one of the best excursions in the region. About 90 minutes from Granada.

Cave houses of the troglodyte neighbourhood in Guadix, Granada
Andalusia's Cave Dwellings

Guadix

Guadix is one of the more genuinely unusual towns in Spain. Around 2,000 people still live in cave houses, homes carved into the soft rock east of the city, many of them inhabited for centuries. The cave neighbourhood has a small museum, and the Renaissance cathedral in the centre is one of the finest in Andalusia. About an hour east of Granada.

Güéjar Sierra village at the foot of the Sierra Nevada near Granada
A Nature Lover's Paradise

Güéjar Sierra

A small Sierra Nevada village about 20 kilometres east of Granada, Güéjar Sierra is the starting point for some of the best walking in the province. The path along the Barranco de San Juan follows the Río Genil through a narrow gorge, passing the old Tranvía de la Sierra route, now a walking and cycling path.

Los Cahorros gorge suspension bridges in Monachil, Sierra Nevada near Granada
A Gateway to Outdoor Adventure

Monachil

Monachil is about 20 minutes from Granada and best known for Los Cahorros, a gorge walk through the Sierra Nevada foothills with suspension bridges, natural rock pools, and short sections of via ferrata. It is one of the most popular half-day walks near the city and suits a wide range of fitness levels. The village has a handful of good bars for lunch afterwards.

Montefrío church on the rock with panoramic views
Where History and Natural Beauty Converge

Montefrío

National Geographic has listed Montefrío's panoramic view among the ten most beautiful in the world, and it is not hard to see why. The town is split between two extraordinary landmarks: an 18th-century neoclassical church perched on a sheer rocky crag, and the ruins of a Moorish fortress on the hill opposite. About an hour northwest of Granada.

Laguna de Padul nature reserve and mammoth excavation site near Granada
A Journey Through Prehistoric Times

Padul

Padul sits about 20 minutes south of Granada and its main draw is genuinely unusual: an active paleontological site in the marshland where mammoth remains have been found alongside evidence of early human presence. The Ruta del Mamut is a short trail through the Paraje Natural lagoon. Odd, interesting, and completely unlike anything else near the city.

Pinos Genil village in the Sierra Nevada foothills
Where Nature's Beauty Beckons

Pinos Genil

A small village about 15 kilometres east of Granada, Pinos Genil sits at the entrance to the Sierra Nevada above the Embalse de Canales reservoir. The surrounding pine forests and the Río Genil make it a decent starting point for walks into the lower sierra. A quiet, low-key stop.
