Frigiliana is a village in the foothills of the Sierra de Almijara, about 60km from Granada and just 6km north of Nerja. The barrio alto, the older upper quarter, is among the best-preserved Moorish barrios in Andalusia: narrow stepped lanes, whitewashed walls, and flower-covered balconies that have changed little for centuries. The village was the site of the last Morisco uprising against the Spanish Crown in 1568, and a series of ceramic tiles along the main lane tells the story in both Spanish and English.
The lower part of the village has the restaurants and shops; from here it is a short walk up into the old barrio. The full circuit of the upper quarter takes under an hour. Frigiliana is most naturally combined with a trip to Nerja - it is a 10-minute drive away and makes a good morning stop before a beach afternoon.
