Things to Do in Granada: A Local Guide for Visitors

Granada rewards the curious traveller. The Alhambra alone justifies the journey — but the city has far more to offer: ancient Moorish streets, free tapas culture, Sacromonte flamenco, and some of the best day trips in southern Spain. The Alpujarras, Sierra Nevada, and the Costa Tropical are all within easy reach.

Granada's essential experiences — all within easy reach of Terraza 6 in the Realejo district.

Essential Granada

The Alhambra

The most visited monument in Spain — and one of the most remarkable buildings in the world. Built over several centuries by Moorish rulers on a forested hill above the city, the Alhambra is a complex of Nasrid palaces, fortress towers, and Renaissance gardens. The level of architectural detail has to be seen in person to be understood. Book tickets well in advance: they sell out weeks ahead in peak season.

Granada's Neighborhoods

Each of Granada's barrios has its own character. The Albaicín is the ancient Moorish quarter — cobbled lanes, whitewashed houses, and the best views of the Alhambra. Sacromonte is built into the hillside, famous for cave houses and flamenco tablaos. Realejo, where Terraza 6 is located, is quieter and mostly local, with good restaurants and easy walking access to everything.

What to Eat in Granada

Few cities take food culture as seriously as Granada. The free tapa tradition — a small plate with every drink — is a way of life here. Beyond the bars, you'll find rustic Andalusian stews, mountain-cured meats from Sierra Nevada, and local wines that pair naturally with the city's unhurried pace.

Granada sits between the Sierra Nevada, the Alpujarras, and the Costa Tropical. All three are under 90 minutes by car — easy half-day or full-day trips from the city.

Mountain Villages

The Alpujarras

A chain of white villages clinging to the southern slopes of Sierra Nevada, the Alpujarras feel remote without being hard to reach. Capileira, Bubión, and Pampaneira are the most visited — each connected by walking trails and offering excellent local food: air-dried ham, mountain cheeses, and honey. A full day is ideal.

Sierra Nevada

Europe's most southerly ski resort is less than an hour from Granada, at over 3,000 metres. In winter it's one of Spain's busiest ski destinations. In summer the runs become hiking trails with panoramic views across Andalusia.

The Costa Tropical — Granada's own coastline — is under an hour by car. Almuñécar, La Herradura, and Nerja each have their own character: sheltered coves, volcanic sand, and a pace that feels very different from the busier costas further east.
