Day Trips from Granada Sierra Nevada

Six Places Worth the Drive into the Alpujarras

The Alpujarras are a chain of whitewashed Berber-style villages on the southern slopes of the Sierra Nevada, about an hour's drive south of Granada. They are worth the trip for the architecture, the mountain ham, and views that on clear days reach Africa. South of the high peaks, the Sierra Nevada drops into steep gorges where these flat-roofed villages cling to the hillsides — one of Spain's most distinctive landscapes.

Alpujarras mountain villages, Sierra Nevada

Six villages in the Alpujarras are covered in this guide: Capileira, Pampaneira, Bubión, Trevélez, Órgiva, and the O Sel Ling monastery. All are within 90 minutes of Granada by car, strung across the southern face of the Sierra Nevada National Park. The architecture is unlike anything else in Spain: flat-roofed houses of North African origin stacked up steep hillsides, narrow cobbled lanes, and an air of quiet that feels genuinely remote.

Where to Go and What to Expect

Capileira village in the Poqueira gorge, Alpujarras near Granada 01
Poqueira Gorge

Capileira

The highest of the three Poqueira gorge villages, Capileira sits at around 1,450 metres and delivers some of the most striking views in all of Andalusia. Low whitewashed houses, a few good local restaurants, and a quiet that is genuinely hard to find this close to a major city.

Pampaneira craft village in the Poqueira gorge, Alpujarras 02
Poqueira Gorge

Pampaneira

The most accessible of the Poqueira villages and a good first stop. Craft shops selling handwoven rugs and blankets, a lively central square, and bars serving plato alpujarreño — the mountain dish of eggs, sausage, ham, and blood sausage done especially well here.

Trevélez — the highest village in mainland Spain, Alpujarras 03
Highest Village in Spain

Trevélez

At around 1,476 metres, Trevélez is the highest village in mainland Spain. The altitude and cold, dry air create perfect curing conditions for some of the country's finest jamón serrano. Walk the village's three distinct tiers and bring ham home. The drive alone is spectacular.

Bubión village in the Poqueira gorge, Alpujarras 04
Poqueira Gorge

Bubión

Between Pampaneira and Capileira, Bubión is the quietest of the three: fewer souvenir shops, less foot traffic, and a more local feel. A good place to walk without purpose, sit in the sun with a coffee, and look out over the gorge.

Órgiva market town in the lower Alpujarras near Granada 05
Lower Alpujarras

Órgiva

The commercial hub of the lower Alpujarras and a genuinely interesting town. A large alternative community lives alongside long-established Andalusian families — which makes the Thursday market unlike any other in the province. Stop here on your way in or out for lunch and supplies.

Discover Órgiva
O Sel Ling Tibetan Buddhist Monastery above Pampaneira, Alpujarras 06
Buddhist Retreat

O Sel Ling Monastery

One of the more unexpected stops in the Alpujarras: a Tibetan Buddhist retreat centre perched above Pampaneira at 1,700 metres. Founded in 1973, the views from the terrace are extraordinary and the atmosphere genuinely peaceful. Worth every metre of the winding road.

Practical advice

What Should You Know Before Visiting the Alpujarras?

Start low, work your way up

Begin in Órgiva or Pampaneira and drive up through the gorge to Capileira. The road is scenic from both directions but the approach from below shows the scale of the landscape best.

Buy ham directly in Trevélez

The curing houses sell direct and the prices are better than in Granada. A vacuum-packed leg travels well and keeps for weeks. Trevélez ham is noticeably different from lower-altitude versions.

Go on a weekday if you can

The Poqueira villages get busy on summer weekends. A Tuesday or Wednesday visit means quieter lanes, easier parking, and a more authentic feel — especially in Pampaneira.
