Perched at 1,700 metres above Pampaneira, O Sel Ling is one of the most unexpected places in southern Spain — a Tibetan Buddhist retreat founded in 1973, with views that on a clear day stretch all the way to the Mediterranean.
O Sel Ling is a Tibetan Buddhist retreat centre perched at 1,700 metres above sea level on the ridge above Pampaneira, reached by a winding track that takes about 20 minutes to drive. It was founded in 1973, making it one of the first Tibetan Buddhist centres established in the West. The name means "Clear Light of Goodness" in Tibetan, and the centre hosts long-term residents, visiting practitioners, and occasional day visitors.
The monastery became internationally known in connection with Osel Hita Torres, born in the nearby village of Bubión in 1985, who was recognised by the Dalai Lama as the reincarnation of Thubten Yeshe. Today the retreat centre is primarily a place of practice rather than a tourist attraction, but day visitors are generally welcome. The views across the Poqueira gorge and towards the Mediterranean are extraordinary. Check the centre's visiting hours before making the drive.

O Sel Ling is primarily a working retreat centre, not a tourist attraction. Visiting hours are limited and can change. Check their website or call ahead before making the 20-minute winding drive up from Pampaneira.
O Sel Ling is directly above Pampaneira. Visit the village first — coffee, craft shops, plato alpujarreño — then drive the winding track up to the monastery in the afternoon. It makes for a complete and varied half-day.
On a clear day the views from the monastery terrace stretch past the gorge, past Órgiva, and towards the Mediterranean coast and Africa beyond. That view alone is worth the drive — but it requires clear conditions to deliver.
