The most accessible and most visited of the three Poqueira villages. Craft shops, a lively central square, and the best introduction to the food and architecture of the Alpujarras.
The most accessible and most visited of the three Poqueira gorge villages, Pampaneira sits at the base of the cluster and serves as the natural first stop on the way up. The central square — Plaza de la Libertad — is surrounded by craft shops selling the distinctive hand-woven rugs and blankets (jarapas) that the Alpujarras has been producing since the Moorish period. The weaving workshops are still active and you can watch them working.
The bars around the square are reliable places to try plato alpujarreño — the mountain staple of fried eggs, blood sausage (morcilla), chorizo, fried potatoes, and cured ham. It's heavy and it's good. The Interpretation Centre for the Biosphere Reserve is also in the village and gives useful background on the Sierra Nevada's ecology and the Alpujarras' history before you head further up the gorge. About 70 kilometres and 75 minutes from Granada by car via the A-44 and A-348.

The Interpretation Centre for the Sierra Nevada Biosphere Reserve is free and located in the village. It gives good context for the landscape, the Alpujarras' history, and the water management systems still visible today.
Several workshops in Pampaneira still produce jarapas on traditional looms. It's worth spending a few minutes watching before buying — the quality varies considerably between the tourist-facing shops and the working studios.
Pampaneira, Bubión, and Capileira are all connected by the same road. Start here, drive up to Bubión for lunch, then Capileira for the afternoon. It's an easy and satisfying day.
