Órgiva is the largest town in the Alpujarras and the practical gateway to the region — most routes into the mountains pass through it. It sits in the lower Alpujarras where the landscape is still Mediterranean rather than alpine, with olive groves, orange trees, and palms rather than the snow and pines of the higher villages. The town has a 16th-century church (Iglesia de Nuestra Señora del Rosario) and a functioning weekly market on Thursdays that draws people from across the region.
What makes Órgiva distinctive is its social mix: a large community of international alternative settlers has lived here since the 1970s and 1980s alongside the long-established Andalusian families, and the Thursday market reflects both — local produce alongside crafts, second-hand goods, and a more eclectic crowd than you'd typically find in rural Andalusia. It's worth stopping for lunch on the way into the mountains. About 55 kilometres from Granada via the A-44, roughly an hour.
The Thursday market is what makes Órgiva worth a specific visit. It runs from morning until early afternoon and combines local farmers selling vegetables and olives with artisans, used goods, and an international mix of stalls that reflects the town's alternative community.
Órgiva has more and better restaurants than the higher villages. If you're heading up to the Poqueira gorge or Trevélez, stopping in Órgiva for lunch on the way back makes the day more comfortable and the drive less rushed.
At around 450 metres, Órgiva stays warmer and sunnier than the higher villages — even in winter. If the mountains are cloudy or cold, the lower Alpujarras around Órgiva can still be pleasant.
