The Best Day Trip on the Coast Near Granada
Nerja is about 100km from Granada, just across the provincial border into Málaga on the Costa del Sol — roughly 1hr 20min by car. It has more to justify the drive than most coastal day trips. The Balcón de Europa is a promenade built on an old fortress headland that juts out over the sea, giving wide views east and west along the coast. The Cuevas de Nerja, 5km east of town, are a network of prehistoric caves with some of the most dramatic stalactite formations in Spain — one chamber is large enough to be used as a concert hall. The beaches, particularly Playa de Burriana, are genuinely excellent.
The old town between the Balcón and the main shopping street is compact and largely pedestrianised. East of town, the Acantilados de Maro-Cerro Gordo natural park protects a stretch of cliffs and coves accessible only on foot — the water at Playa de Maro, reached by a steep track, is among the clearest on the whole southern coast. Nerja is more visited than the Costa Tropical beaches to the west, but it has considerably more to offer.
