Guejar Sierra is a village at the foot of the Sierra Nevada, about 15km from Granada via the GR-420. It sits above the Rio Genil gorge and is the starting point for the Vereda de la Estrella, one of the most popular mountain walks in Granada province, following the river valley up into the high Sierra Nevada. The old narrow-gauge railway line that once connected Granada to the village has been converted into the Via Verde de Sierra Nevada, a walking and cycling path along the gorge that suits all fitness levels.
The village itself is compact and traditionally Andalusian. It makes a good base for accessing Sierra Nevada on foot without passing through the ski resort, while the Vereda de la Estrella continues toward the higher mountain refuges and peaks for those prepared for a full mountain day.
