Montefrio is a town of around 5,000 people in the northwest of Granada province, about 65km from the city via the A-333. Its skyline, with the Moorish Alcazaba on one limestone outcrop and the circular Iglesia de la Encarnacion on another, facing each other across the valley, was included by National Geographic in a list of the worlds ten best panoramic views. The church, designed by Ventura Rodriguez in the late 18th century, is one of the very few circular churches in Spain.
The best viewpoint is the Mirador de la Villa, a short walk from the town centre. The surrounding countryside is covered in olive groves, and Montefrio produces olive oil that has won repeated awards. The town has a Tuesday market and a compact old quarter that easily rewards an hour of exploration.
