Monachil is a village 10km from Granada on the A-395, at the edge of Sierra Nevada. It is best known for Los Cahorros de Monachil, a gorge walk through a narrow limestone ravine above the Rio Monachil. The route follows the riverbed, crossing it repeatedly on hanging suspension bridges strung between the rock faces, and passes several pools and short waterfall sections. The full circuit takes about 2 to 3 hours and is one of the most popular hiking days out from Granada.
Monachil is also on the main road up to Pradollano, the Sierra Nevada ski station, which makes it an easy stop on the way to or from the mountains. The village has a small Andalusian centre with a few places to eat.
